The Internet is for Everyone ... officially
Vint Cerf, acknowledged as one of the creators of
what we now call the Internet has released a document
in the form of a "Request For Comment" (RFC) entitled
"The Internet is for Everyone." The document,
RFC 3271 is short compared to other RFC's
but the content of this document is something that
must be part of all of our thinking about the future
of a networked culture and economy. In our haste to
capitalize on the opportunities presented by
the Internet, much of the intent and the soul of the Internet
has been diluted.
It may seem trivial to say "The Internet is for Everyone"
but it is not a trivial undertaking. It may seem idealistic
to say "The Internet is for Everyone" and mean more than
"The Internet is for Everyone ... with a credit card and the desire to buy
books online and contribute to the demographic mining beast."
It is idealistic and utopian and wacko to think of the
connected mind that is the Internet and hope and plan for
an evolution. In a world where we spend so much energy
and money on drawing and defending personal, political,
emotional, economic and technical borders, can we afford
not not spend some energy planning and creating
strong connections instead of more divisions.
