WarrantyCards.com for DuPont Corian® Division
Webfarm developed and administered a web application to allow the
distributors and fabricators of DuPont Corian to more efficiently and
effectively register warranty information. This project is highlighted
as a demonstration of the ability to evolve existing complex information
workflow in a way that adds value for all constituencies without trauma
to the organization.
The first version of this application went online at the end of 1999 and
was run by Webfarm until the end of 2003 when DuPont moved the project
to their in-house technical team.
This project presented significant challenges in data management, web
application development and integration with existing business
processes. The process of discovering the dependencies and input/output
path of information through the entire process has led to a system with
granular services that can be upgraded as the process evolves. The
target users of this application vary widely in experience from people
who are new to the Internet to very experienced computer users.
One of the techniques that has helped evolve the application is
Webfarm's use of in-band error reporting and resolution. Webfarm handles
user interface issues and error handling by actively sending alerts on
any unknown condition. This approach, as opposed to simple logging,
allows Webfarm to be able to view errors in context and actively address
the user issues that led to the error.
This project fit very well into the Webfarm philosophy of developing
applications that reflect and enhance existing and evolving business
processes. The existing process for handling paper based registration
was significant and well developed Disruption of this ongoing process is
absolutely unacceptable. By designing the application to provide input
and output in familiar formats, we are able to evolve the process with
minimal disruption and maximum benefit and flexibility.
